The Sumatra Ecoeconomy Initiative

A Partnership for Sustainable Futures in Gunung Leuser National Park

Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the last place on Earth where tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses, orangutans, and sun bears coexist in the wild. Its varied landscapes, from dense rainforests to towering mountains, support a remarkable diversity of life, making it one of the most ecologically significant regions on the planet. Preserving this pristine ecosystem is essential not only for wildlife but also for the livelihoods of the surrounding communities.

The Sumatra EcoEconomy Initiative is a collaboration between the Savia Foundation and KPL (Leuser Tourist Group Guide), a dedicated local NGO based in Ketambe Village in Southeast Aceh, Indonesia.

Our current objective is to help KPL establish a SMART patrol group in 800 hectares of forest that are isolated from the touristic areas of the park. This has three effects: through the patrol group, we directly protect the forest, we support local employment and provide alternatives to activities that threaten the ecosystem’s integrity.

Our key partner, KPL, has been involved in community organizing and conservation efforts in the region since 2017.

KPL works closely with park authorities and the government to enhance conservation efforts and develop effective management strategies. These relationships enable coordinated actions to prevent illegal activities such as logging and poaching, ensuring the protection of Gunung Leuser’s diverse ecosystems.
